How to read the forecast

Weather and waves in El Palmar.

Four keys to understanding the El Palmar forecast and choosing the best time to surf.

Waves: height and period

Height shows the size of the swell and period its power. A long period usually brings cleaner waves with more push.

Wind: levante and poniente

A light levante (easterly) blows offshore and cleans up the waves. The poniente (westerly) blows onshore and makes them messy.

Tide

The tide changes how the wave breaks on the sandbank. Mid tide is usually the best at El Palmar beach.

Best season

From autumn to spring the waves are most consistent. In summer the sea is calmer: perfect for learning.
